Summary

would've been great, if I understood 10% of the science this guy talked about。 But enjoyed my stupidity nevertheless。 would've been great, if I understood 10% of the science this guy talked about。 But enjoyed my stupidity nevertheless。 。。。more

A deeply entertaining book with some fantastic resources, answering some seriously fascinating questions! Really makes you think while simultaneously scaring you sh**less realizing how fragile yet durable (if that makes sense), that our earth really is!

This is a super fun examination of wacky science questions。 I'm not sure I would recommend reading it the way I did - straight through like a standard novel。 The short vignettes lend themselves much more to being read in small doses。 This is a super fun examination of wacky science questions。 I'm not sure I would recommend reading it the way I did - straight through like a standard novel。 The short vignettes lend themselves much more to being read in small doses。 。。。more

Strongly recommend What If? to anyone with a technical background - it tickles you into thinking outside the box。

This book is funny, witty, interesting, smart。 And it's a quick read。 If you like science and explanations of how things work, along with a little absurd comedy, this is the book for you。 This book is funny, witty, interesting, smart。 And it's a quick read。 If you like science and explanations of how things work, along with a little absurd comedy, this is the book for you。 。。。more

This was really interesting。 Some of the questions I didn't think I would care about, but ended up absorbed in the information。 The author presents the material in an engaging way and I found myself laughing quite a bit。 I shared some of the answers with my adult son and we have been having great conversations about them。 This was really interesting。 Some of the questions I didn't think I would care about, but ended up absorbed in the information。 The author presents the material in an engaging way and I found myself laughing quite a bit。 I shared some of the answers with my adult son and we have been having great conversations about them。 。。。more

This was a lot of fun。。 unbelievable questions answered with a seriousness and sense of wonder! Impossible situations explained with science。 It also got repetitive very quickly。 Huge numbers are amazing! But a some point large numbers just get too big to even be interesting。

Fun book, enjoyed it, super easy to read but some answers are boring。 Recommend it if you are looking to read something completely different。

As good as a gimmicky popular science book can be - the fun part is unassuming and never annoying, and the science part is fairly interesting。 It's obvious that the author takes great pleasure in digging through odd research and specification, and a lot of that enjoyment is reflected in his work。 And while many scenarios end in explosions or/and the Earth being destroyed, the book tries its best to remain varied to the last page。 My only complaint is that I found the footnotes a bit distracting As good as a gimmicky popular science book can be - the fun part is unassuming and never annoying, and the science part is fairly interesting。 It's obvious that the author takes great pleasure in digging through odd research and specification, and a lot of that enjoyment is reflected in his work。 And while many scenarios end in explosions or/and the Earth being destroyed, the book tries its best to remain varied to the last page。 My only complaint is that I found the footnotes a bit distracting and the font too small, but the latter just might be me getting older。 。。。more

Good funInteresting questions with well thought out answers delivered with a sassy twist。 I enjoyed this read。 It was great to take a break from novels whilst not being too heavy。

5/5I loved this! I spend way to much time thinking about hypothetical questions, so this could not have been a better book for me。 I hadn't ever heard of or seen the XKCD comic before, so this was all new and fresh for me。 I enjoyed the sense of humor and style the book was presented in。 I do not study or work in a STEM field, so I cannot speak of the accuracy of the science and will take it all in good faith that the author did his research and knows his stuff, but I feel like I learned a lot a 5/5I loved this! LOVE IT! Great stories, written in an easy to read, informative, and comedic way。 I would read a few of the uestions every night before bed, always put me in a great mood no matter how my day had been。

This was a silly, fun book。 Some chapters had Sooo much math it was listening to a foreign language。 Others were laugh out loud funny。 If you read this, do the Audiobook。 Think it would be less funny to read it 。

Smart, ironic, sometimes even funny。 Some questions are really absurd, and the answers even more!I really loved the illustrations。I'll give only 3 stars because a lot of questions concern astronomy or geology and I am not a fan of these topics。 Smart, ironic, sometimes even funny。 Some questions are really absurd, and the answers even more!I really loved the illustrations。I'll give only 3 stars because a lot of questions concern astronomy or geology and I am not a fan of these topics。 。。。more

A fun and oddly informative book。 The questions may be absurd, but the science and math used to answer them is sound。

Super fun project and a nice getaway book from the all serious business /health books I have been going over recently。 Also during last week I noticed that instead of usual 2-3 books "in progress" I had 6 at the same time。 This one was definitely the most fun and easy reading and i chose this one to be the first of the six to be "done" with。Wondrous world of humans who ask the questions and even more marvellous one of Randall being able to answer these absurd questions in such a serious way。 Res Super fun project and a nice getaway book from the all serious business /health books I have been going over recently。 Also during last week I noticed that instead of usual 2-3 books "in progress" I had 6 at the same time。 This one was definitely the most fun and easy reading and i chose this one to be the first of the six to be "done" with。Wondrous world of humans who ask the questions and even more marvellous one of Randall being able to answer these absurd questions in such a serious way。 Respect! 。。。more

A collection of quirkiest and mind bending thoughts that will engage you for days。 Can we empty the oceans ? What if you can print money from your printer ? What if we collect all periodic table elements together ? Simple explanations to weirdest hypothetical questions。

DELIGHTFUL。A compilation of silly questions posed on Randall Munroe's webcomic, XKCD。com。 It is astonishing how many seemingly innocuous actions, such as hitting a baseball pitched at 90% the speed of light, lead to the TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF EARTH。 Also, what WOULD happen if the earth stopped spinning but the atmosphere kept going?Read on and find out the answers to these and many other questions no one ever needed an answer to。 DELIGHTFUL。A compilation of silly questions posed on Randall Munroe's webcomic, XKCD。com。 It is astonishing how many seemingly innocuous actions, such as hitting a baseball pitched at 90% the speed of light, lead to the TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF EARTH。 Also, what WOULD happen if the earth stopped spinning but the atmosphere kept going?Read on and find out the answers to these and many other questions no one ever needed an answer to。 。。。more

Most exciting book of recent times, hands down!!!Very poignant, relatable delivery of scientific takes on many hypotheticals that makes all of the school science lessons and (not-so-self-evident) tenets one picks up here and there in their lifetime WAY more relevant。That's how science (and writing!) should be taught and exemplified。It made for such an entertaining and nicely episodic bed-time reading that I will definitely be picking up other works by Munroe。 Amazeballs! This was a fun read, if maybe not entirely for me。 The author did answer absurd hypothetical questions as promised, although many if not most of the questions weren't terribly compelling to start, so it was difficult to stay invested in the answers。 I was impressed with the depth of research the author made on these random scenarios。 For example, whether placing all of the elements on the periodic table next to each other in one room would destroy the world。 (It sounds like they would!) Rating 4,5This was fun! While a few of the calculations still went over my head, I thoroughly enjoyed this。 To be honest, for a reader, the calculations don't really matter。 It's more about the general answer and the way in which Munroe formulates that answer - splendidly。 The illustrations and simple humour ensure that a subject that could be dry and boring is accessible and enjoyable。 And, of course, the questions itself are absolutely absurd and often funny on their own, regardless of Munroe' Rating 4,5This was fun! I think science, and especially Physics, as fascinating。 When I was in high school, in a fairly scientifically centered cursus, I used to be able to understand Maths and Biology and Chemistry fairly well。 I was always very bad at Physics though, because it's a lot of concepts that go so far over my head, it makes me feel real dumb。But I admire people who understand Physics so much, because they can literally do anything。This is the proof of that honestly。Physics nerds have power unrivaled by any I think science, and especially Physics, as fascinating。 When I was in high school, in a fairly scientifically centered cursus, I used to be able to understand Maths and Biology and Chemistry fairly well。 I was always very bad at Physics though, because it's a lot of concepts that go so far over my head, it makes me feel real dumb。But I admire people who understand Physics so much, because they can literally do anything。This is the proof of that honestly。Physics nerds have power unrivaled by anyone else in any field, no joke。 They can spend years measuring random stuff that may never be used in theories and inventions or anything。 They just want to KNOW, and that's really admirable !And then Randall Munroe comes in with a stupid question and finally their research is justified, it's brilliant!I don't think there is a point to this book really it's just very entertaining to imagine Impossible scenarios that more often than not end in mass destruction。 It makes me glad to remember that at some point, I was a science nerd。Some chapters were more interesting than not, I have to admit that the formulas and calculations heavy were a little hard for me to grasp, but most concepts were simplified and drawn well enough that I could understand them, with my basic science training that I haven't upgraded in years。I had a great time and am now horrified by the things that exist in space, so good fun all around! 。。。more
